Second Chances Everywhere at Second Chance Pet Adoptions

We are excited to begin announcing the rescue groups joining us at our 12th annual Spring Fling Dog & Cat Fundraiser with one that has been with us every year since the very 1st Spring Fling!

We are thrilled to have Second Chance Pet Adoptions joining us again this year! When asked what they love about Spring Fling this is what they said:

"It's such a great, community-building event! Wonderful to see so many people out with their own dogs, and they are always so happy to stop by the other booths to meet the adoptable animals. We love getting to share our organization and mission with attendees and our attendance usually generates some new adoption, foster and/or volunteer applications!"

Did you hear that? You can sign up to foster and volunteer with rescues at Spring Fling in addition to seeing who they have available for adoption! Spring Fling is a great place to learn about your local rescues and find an organization to get involved with- you can make a difference for the homeless pets in our community.

"Second Chance Pet Adoptions is the oldest no-kill animal rescue organization in Raleigh serving Wake County and the surrounding areas. Since our inception in 1987, we have helped over 20,000 dogs and cats find their forever homes. We also partner with other organizations and communities to promote responsible pet ownership with the goal of reducing future generations of homeless animals." 

Second Chance started like most rescues do, with a small group that wanted to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets in their community. In the beginning, they were completely foster based but in 2004 the program and support had grown so much, they were able to open a cageless, no-kill facility to house cats. Their dogs still reside in foster homes, but they are one of the few rescues in the area that has a place you can go to visit adoptable cats. 

It is a bit far in advance to highlight an adoptable pet from Second Chance for Spring Fling, as some get adopted quickly which is great! They have lots of wonderful pets for adoption so check out their website (link below) and see if you find the next member of your family! Facilitate Rescue Inc - Saving cats in Lillington, NC

Facilitate Rescue Inc. is another group that has joined us for Spring Fling in the past and we are excited to have them back again this year!

"Established in 2017, Facilitate Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit cat rescue organization that operates under the 501(c)(3) status. We are committed to rescuing cats and kittens who are in danger of being euthanized. With the help of dedicated fosters, volunteers, and generous donations, we are able to rescue many cats from the Harnett County Shelter in Lillington, NC, as well as take in kittens and cats from the community."

Like most rescues, Facilitate Rescue relies on volunteers and foster homes to save cats in need. They can only save as many cats as they have foster homes available so if you want to help out, fostering would be a great way to do that!

One of their available cats is Mama, pictured here. This is what her people have to say about her: "Mama was an outdoor cat at a mobile home park in Benson. She had been hanging around the park for at least five years. Four years ago, she showed up with an injury, and the people who were feeding her determined that it was an animal attack. Four years later, the injury was not healing, and they finally reached out for help. I picked up Mama and took her to the vet, who said that her injury was actually a burn. They do not know if it was a chemical burn or a heat burn. Mama has adapted perfectly to being an indoor – only cat. She is loving and well behaved. She uses her litter box like she’s been doing it for life. I keep a collar on her to keep her from licking her injury. It gets better and then the scab falls off and it looks raw again. I hope in time it will heal, although she probably will be scarred for life. She deserves a good home with people who will actually take care of her."

Mia's Mafia - cat adoption and TNR to help as many cats as possible!

Our Stonehenge customers should recognize this next group! Mia's Mafia is a regular user of the Cat Shack adoption area there and their cats are always popular. Mia's Mafia has been a regular Spring Fling attendee since they formed, and we are excited to have them back this year.

Mia's Mafia is inspired by Mia- a tiny, grumpy, hospice foster cat, meaning she was diagnosed with many medical issues. The people around her fell in love and wanted to make a difference for cats in need like Mia. The way they decided to do that is through Trap-Neuter-Return (commonly abbreviated as TNR) which is a process to spay and neuter feral cats and return them to the area where they were trapped (as often as possible). Community cats like these often have dedicated caretakers and are very much loved. Just because a cat doesn't want human interaction, doesn't mean they don't deserve to live their life as happy and healthy as possible!

True feral cats are very happy out in their environment. They can always use a little help, in the form of someone to provide regular meals and bring them to a vet for medical care when they need it. Being spayed or neutered is also a huge help for these cats. Intact cats are more likely to get into fights during the breeding season and often sustain injuries or contract FIV. Additionally, feral cats are the main contributors of unwanted kittens that flood shelters and rescues during "kitten season" every year. Unlike their adult counterparts, kittens have a hard time surviving outside with predators, cars, inclement weather, and the people who view them as a nuisance.

While the TNR program is a huge part of the Mia's Mafia mission, they often come across cats who are not actually feral. These cats are usually former pets who were dumped or abandoned and left to fend for themselves. It's easy to spot these guys, even the ones who are too scared to be friendly. Where their true feral friends are well-kept and have good body conditions, pet cats who have been abandoned don't have the skills to survive without human help. They are often dirty and thin since they are not able to hunt well, and they aren't accustomed to caring for themselves outside. As much as possible, Mia's Mafia takes these cats in and puts them up for adoption after taking care of their medical needs. One of their cats who was in that type of situation is Tiramisu! This adorable little lady, pictured here, has stayed in the Cat Shack a couple times and is somehow still looking for her perfect match.
