Our Durham customers will likely be familiar with this next group, Independent Animal Rescue. They often hold adoption events at our Parkway Plaza store and we love having them!

In addition to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming hundreds of dogs and cats each year, Independent Animal Rescue (IAR) operates an in-house spay/neuter clinic serving cats in the community as well as those in our foster program. Spay/neuter is a key piece of IAR’s mission to reduce the suffering of unwanted animals.

“Our mission is to rescue and care for cats and dogs in need and reduce the suffering of unwanted animals through our adoption, spay/neuter, and community education programs.
At IAR, we believe that the welfare of animals is paramount. We feel that we can alleviate problems associated with dog and cat overpopulation and abandonment using a 3-pronged approach: (1) Rescue and adoption of unwanted and abused animals; (2) funding and providing spay/neuter services; (3) education and outreach on animal welfare to our community.”

Here’s one of their adoptable pets, Usagi. Usagi is the sweetest little hunk of love you will ever meet! This darling four-year-old dog came to IAR as a stray. She is a snuggler through and through, loves to play, and is very smart and eager to please. Usagi adores her people, but is fearful at first of new humans and new dogs. She is searching for a kind, patient forever family who will continue to work with her as she slowly but surely builds confidence and gains trust. This special girl will bring boundless love, affection, and laughs to her forever home, and she deserves an equally special forever family who can help her feel safe and reciprocate that boundless love! You can learn more about sweet, adoptable Usagi here.

You can keep up with IAR and all their adoptable pets on their website, linked above, or on their social media channels, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

PIPs is a group that helps dogs that not everyone would be willing to take right away, the most urgent cases. Their vision was to take in any and all dogs that have medical or special needs but a dog doesn’t have to have special needs to come into the rescue. Their main goal is to help as many dogs as they can.

Each dog goes to a foster home and is given as much love as they need before they go to their furever home.

"Our name says it all, PIPs’ primary focus are medical and special needs dogs that are often overlooked. We call these dogs “PIP-abled” which means perfectly imperfect. A dog that may need a wheelchair, is missing limbs, deaf, blind or in need of some extra love and care – this is our niche."

One of their perfectly imperfect pups is Badger. Here is a little about him.

“Hi I’m Badger! I’m a big boy with a big heart. Humans haven’t always been kind to me but I have learned there are some good ones! I am house and crate trained, walk well on the leash, and play kindly with other dogs. I’d like an active home but once I get my energy out I’m happy to take a nap near my mom. Cats are new to me and they make me a little nervous but I’m not mean to them. I’m more than ready for my perfect forever home.”

Odin's Orphans Rescue is an all volunteer group of rescuers dedicated to helping as many homeless dogs in Nash County as they can. Nearly all of their dogs come from the county shelter, and are there for any number of reasons from abandonment and neglect, to owners no longer able to care for them. This group takes great care in screening potential homes to ensure that each dog is matched with the best family for their needs and vice versa. Education is provided on the responsibilities and costs of pet ownership to all prospective adopters.

"Animals in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and are placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement into their permanent homes. We assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed, or ease of placement. To the extent our finances allow, dogs in greatest need take priority."

Luna is one of the dogs in their care looking for her perfect match! Here is a little about her. Meet Luna! She is about 6-7 years old! She is very social, loves people and other dogs! She enjoys spending her days on walks, car rides, and snuggling on the couch! She is up to date on all vaccines!! Luna recently had a common skin cancer removed and is doing GREAT!! We will only accept in-state (NC) adoptions for this sweet girl!

We are excited to have Odin's Orphans joining us for Spring Fling again this year! Check them out on Facebook and Instagram!
