Charlie Mike Blog Announcement

Look who's back for their fourth year at Spring Fling! Charlie Mike is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans and first responders through life changing programs including therapy dogs, equestrian healing, disaster response, and community support. They help those who served find connection, purpose, and a path forward.

This incredible organization was created by modern combat veterans who know the realities of war and the realities of returning to civilian life. Their mission is to save the lives of those still carrying the unseen wounds of combat- one veteran at a time. Their vision is to help Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors help one another "Continue the Mission of Life," in whatever form that may be. They believe that by standing together at home, just as they stood together during war time, they will help each other succeed in getting back to life.

They are looking forward to Spring Fling because:

"It truly is a magical event where the dogs are the highlight and community is at its best. It gives us a great opportunity to connect with people about our Battle Buddies program."

In 2025, Veterans were paired with Battle Buddies who became lifelines on the hardest days. Participants found moments of peace in the saddle. Their teams showed up when disaster struck. And through their growing community, more heroes felt seen, supported, and never alone.

The biggest recent win for Charlie Mike was watching lives stabilize. Seeing veterans sleep better, feel less alone, and reconnect with hope because someone and something showed up for them. The work they did in Western NC after Hurricane Helene was extremely impactful at every level.

Serving those who served—veterans and first responders—through canine partnerships, equine therapy, and community-based healing.

Battle Buddies come from municipal animal shelters and rescues across the country. There are millions of dogs in need and Charlie Mike can save two lives, the life of a dog and the life of a veteran. There are numerous characteristics that are evaluated in a potential Battle Buddy dogs, like intelligence, motivation, temperament, food drive, motivation, and disposition.

Each potential Battle Buddy goes through at least two to four months of training to become capable, competent, and obedient companion dogs. They are constantly evaluated on different tasks and behaviors in order to eventually graduate from their training. This gives them the best chance of success with their new veteran partner.

Like traditional rescues, Charlie Mike provides care including vet visits, treatment for any outstanding health concerns, and training. There is no cost for veterans to adopt a dog from Charlie Mike. They also have dogs available for civilian adoption for a minimal fee, which, in turn, is used to fund the Battle Buddy program and keep it going strong!

Lab Rescue is coming to Spring Fling 2025!

The Doghouse Project is joining us for their first ever Spring Fling! They are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides doghouses, food, treats, straw, safe tethers, and other goods to outdoor dogs. They also provide rescue support when it’s needed most. One of our biggest recent accomplishments has been successfully advocating for changes to the animal welfare ordinances in Pender County!

Every kennel cleaned, every supply delivered, every difficult conversation had with an owner, and every ordinance improved is done with one goal in mind: giving dogs a safer, better life.

The Doghouse Project focuses not only on immediate intervention, but long-term change. From helping individual dogs like Chance rebuild confidence and health, to working with counties to strengthen animal welfare ordinances, our mission is rooted in sustainable impact. We believe education, community involvement, and collaboration are just as important as rescue itself.

The Doghouse Project was founded with a simple but powerful mission: to help dogs in need stay safe, warm, and loved. What began as a grassroots effort fueled by compassion quickly grew into a community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of dogs facing hardship.

Through outreach, advocacy, and hands-on support, The Doghouse Project works to provide essential resources such as proper shelter, supplies, and assistance to families who may be struggling but want to keep their pets. Built on the belief that every dog deserves protection and care, the organization continues to expand its impact one dog at a time.

Through persistence, community support, and ongoing communication with county officials, The Doghouse Project played a role in pushing for stronger protections for dogs. These ordinance changes mean clearer standards, better accountability, and improved living conditions for animals across the county.

The Doghouse Project is just getting started, and they are committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of dogs and the people who love them. They are still growing. Still building. Still fighting for the ones who don’t have a voice.

This wasn’t just about one dog — it was about creating lasting change. Because of these updates, countless dogs in Pender County will now have better protection and a safer future.

Lending Paws A Hand Rescue to Join Unleashed's Spring Fling!
Lending Paws A Hand Rescue to join Unleashed's Spring Fling!

Lending Paws a Hand (LPAH) is one of our OG Spring Fling vendors. LPAH is a 501c3 nonprofit foster-based dog and cat rescue that focuses on helping animals in Lee County, NC. They have many wonderful opportunities to volunteer, foster, donate, and adopt. The things that LPAH loves most about Spring Fling is meeting all of the wonderful cat and dog owners, passionate businesses, and rescues that support animal rescue!

Ed and Mary - Lending Paws a Hand

Lending Paws a Hand was founded in 2014 with a mission to save the lives of unwanted dogs and cats throughout Lee County, North Carolina. Lending Paws A Hand works with their community and a rural county animal shelter to transfer at-risk animals into temporary foster homes and ultimately find them permanent, loving homes where they can find happiness, comfort and care for the rest of their lives. They also work closely with their community, including establishing their Tails on Trails program to help promote walking, wellness, and pet food distribution at their local food bank to help owners provide for their pets.

In 2025, LPAH rescued over 150 animals (cats and dogs) from Lee County, NC. They were also honored to be selected as 1 of 27 nonprofits across the nation for the Defender Service Award-Honoree Category. They look forward to also expanding their reach to continue helping their rural community with needs through their Ichi and Luke Legacy Fund, which they originally launched in 2024.

This group has been helping the animals of Lee County since 2014. Like so many rescue groups, they are foster based, which means that they don't have a physical shelter location. All of their adoptable dogs and cats live with foster families which gives them a great picture of how the pet will behave in their forever home! It also means that they are limited in the number of animals they can help; without people opening their homes to foster, they can't take in more animals. If you would like to join their volunteer and foster team, please fill out a Foster Application or Volunteer Application.

LPAH Pet Pantry

LPAH is just starting to launch their pet food bank in partnership with the Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County Food Bank, and they are in need of pet food donations. Whether you have a dog/cat that has recently changed diets or if you work for a store that has extra pet food to be donated, they will gladly accept donated food to help launch this program. The food bank serves 750 families each month with almost 80% of them having pet food needs. The need is great as there is no current pet food bank in Lee County. Lending Paws a Hand would like to help out as many families as they can!
