We are happy to have HEAL House Call Vets joining us again as a COMMUNITY SPONSOR! Come meet Dr. Lauren Huges and Dr. Zimmerman and thank them for their sponsorship on Sunday, April 26th!

Heal House Call Vets was started by the meeting of two minds: Betsy Banks Saul, co-creator of Petfinder, and Erin O'Leary, local veterinarian. Their paths crossed when Betsy made an appointment with Erin to treat her old dog, Jim, who could no longer walk, with laser therapy, Erin's specialty. While Jim was undergoing treatment-and improving steadily- Betsy and Erin talked about some of the frustrating aspects of a brick-and-mortar veterinary practice, both from the veterinarian’s and the client’s point of view. The more they talked, they realized that with Betsy’s business acumen and Erin’s practice experience, they could design a model that would provide a great opportunity for veterinarians to facilitate client satisfaction and ease the drudgery of running a business. Heal House Call Veterinarian was born.

Heal House Call Veterinarian champions independent veterinarians who individualize their schedule and practice. And bonus: they come to you! Heal helps with the business aspect of veterinary care so that veterinarians can practice however much they want, when they want, and where they want.

" Your vet. Every visit in the comfort of home. Your pets are family. That's why they need health care that's as special as they are. From the creator of Petfinder, Heal is here for you for all stages of your pet's life."

Dr. Shayne Zimmerman is a graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has received her Certificate for Veterinary Acupuncture from Chi University. She offers integrative and holistic therapies including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, homeopathic care, ozone therapy, reiki, and mistletoe therapy. She also consults with and coordinates with any general specialty practice veterinarians you are working with to provide the highest-quality, comprehensive care for your loved ones! Dr. Zimmerman sees herself as part of your pet’s care team, and the best outcomes happen when you all work together. She cares for dogs and cats in and around Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Raleigh, Apex, and Cary.

Meet Dr. Zimmerman

"Hello! I’m Shayne Zimmerman. I’ve been a veterinarian in North Carolina for over 25 years. I’ve been practicing acupuncture and TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) since 2011. I’m happy to announce that I am partnering with Heal House Call to offer mobile veterinary services in Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs, Apex, Fuquay Varina, and surrounding areas.

My practice is specialized and centers on holistic modalities exclusively. The services that I offer for dogs and cats of all ages include:

  • Routine wellness evaluation according to TCVM principles; with food, supplement and preventative care recommendations for puppies, kittens and adult pets.

  • Chronic care evaluation and consulting as needed to complement or replace traditional medical management.

  • TCVM food as medicine

  • Chinese and Western herbal medicine

  • Acupuncture

  • Soft tissue works and trigger point release

  • Energy medicine (Reiki, Qi Gong, facilitated heart to heart coherence meditation)

  • Ozone therapy

  • Mistletoe therapy

  • *I continue to learn and gather information and will add modalities and help coordinate other alternative treatment protocols in cooperation with you and other holistic practitioners as appropriate.

Chronic conditions that can benefit from these approaches include but are not limited to: environmental allergies or food sensitivities, other chronic skin or GI conditions, recurrent ear infections, osteoarthritis or other causes of musculoskeletal pain, anxiety or other behavioral challenges, geriatric cognitive changes, hormonal or metabolic imbalances, chronic organ systems insufficiencies, seizures, cancer or autoimmune diseases. The above therapies are offered based on subjective physical and energetic assessment modalities and for the most part do not depend on conventional Western disease diagnoses.

I want to help support the most balanced and evidence-based approach to your pets’ care. I am happy to consult and coordinate with any general and specialty practice veterinarians with whom you are cooperating to provide the most excellent and comprehensive care for your loved ones! At any time, I am happy to review current medical records and offer guidance for moving forward."

Dr. Zimmerman lives in Holly Springs, North Carolina along with her canine housemates Tigger, a bounding tumbleweed of Mini-Aussiedoodle; Meki, a fierce 4 pounds of Chihuahua; and Dinah, a compact Pittie full of grandma energy. The resident felines are Harvey the Grouchy, Brick the Rebellious, and Tiny Cat the Neurotic. The household is supervised by Gary the African Grey standup comic, and Joncena the pugilistic Green-cheeked conure.

In addition to her veterinary degree, she has a bachelor's in psychology from the University of Maryland at College Park. She enjoys doing yoga teacher trainings, silent meditation retreats, and CrossFit competitions. She loves to lead group and individual fitness and meditation activities. Walking in the woods (with a Doodle of course) is her self-described "happy place."

"My passion is in alternative medicine and energy healing practices, and a mobile practice allows me to focus on this without the distractions of busy everyday Western medicine. I love to learn and will continue to add new modalities as I find them. If you’ve heard about something new, please ask me about it! If I don’t know about it yet, we can learn about it together. I want to help support the most balanced and evidence-based approach to your pets’ care."

Second Chance Pet Adoptions Blog Announcement

Look who's back for a fourth year at Spring Fling! Second Chance Pet Adoptions is the oldest no-kill animal rescue organization in Raleigh serving Wake County and the surrounding areas. Since their inception in 1987, Second Chance Pet Adoptions has helped nearly 23,000 dogs and cats find their forever homes.

Second Chance's mission is to champion homeless cats and dogs that are healthy and treatable in the quest to find their forever home, and to engage with other organizations and communities to promote responsible pet ownership with the goal of reducing future generations of homeless animals.

Second Chance started like most rescues do, with a small group that wanted to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets in their community. In the beginning, they were completely foster based but in 2004 the program and support had grown so much, they were able to open a cageless, no-kill facility to house cats. They became of the few rescues in the area that has a place you can go to visit adoptable cats.

Second Chance had a great year in 2025! They expanded their footprint by 40%, adding additional square footage to expand their dog program and give valuable space back to the cats in their program (who didn't love having to share space with the dogs!). They added several staff members and increased the number of dog and cat adoptions over 2024 too.

They also worked to reduce the heartbreaking animal homelessness problem in our state by dedicating funds to provide 1,650 spay/neuter surgeries to residents in rural communities in our state for whom access to these procedures is difficult due to access and/or prohibitive cost.

We are thrilled to have Second Chance Pet Adoptions joining us again this year! When asked what they love about Spring Fling this is what they said:

"We LOVE this event! It's such a great way to bring together the community - rescue organizations, small businesses, animal lovers. There is something for everyone!"

You can learn more about Second Chance, the work they do, and see all their adoptable animals on their website. Make sure to follow them on their socials, Facebook and Instagram, to keep up with their activities, events, and all their adorable adoptable dogs and cats!
