Paws 4 Ever Joins Spring Fling!

Oak City Wildlife will be joining Unleashed for their first Spring Fling this year! They are a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure native wildlife receives the special care it deserves. From small rodents to squirrels, to groundhogs and more, they dedicate their resources to supporting and training rehabbers so that injured wildlife can safely return to their natural habitat at full speed ahead.


Oak City Wildlife provides training and support to wildlife rehabbers including classes on Wildlife Rehab and Licensing; they also work to promote public education about connecting and coexisting with the natural world.

"Oak City Wildlife is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned animals, ensuring they receive the care needed to thrive in their natural habitats once again."

Mia's Mafia - Saving Cats through Adoption and Trap, Neuter, Release

If you shop at Unleashed's North Raleigh location in Stonehenge Market, you might recognize this next rescue group from the "Cat Shack," where the Mia's Mafia's adoptable kitties often come to spend the week! Mia's Mafia is a small group of animal lovers who are working together to help facilitate Trap Neuter Release (TNR), medical care, and adoption for animals in need. Mia's Mafia has been a regular Spring Fling attendee since they formed, and we are thrilled to have them back again this year.

Mia's Mafia began with a rescue cat, affectionately known as “Murderous Mia,” who came to her mom as a hospice foster with many medical issues. Her foster and the people around her fell in love and decided that they wanted to make a difference for cats in need like Mia. The way they chose to do that is through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) which is a process to spay and neuter feral cats and return them to the area where they were trapped (as often as possible). Community cats like these often have dedicated caretakers and are very much loved. Just because a cat doesn't want human interaction, doesn't mean they don't deserve to live their life as happy and healthy as possible!

"We focus on keeping things positive and supporting each other so that we can be at our best to do the most good for the animals. We strive to collaborate with others and encourage our team to come up with new and better ideas of ways to help and to run with those ideas."

True feral cats are very happy out in their environment. They can always use a little help though, in the form of someone to provide regular meals and bring them to a vet for medical care when they need it. Being spayed or neutered is also a huge help for these cats. Intact cats are more likely to get into fights during the breeding season and often sustain injuries or contract FIV. Additionally, feral cats are the main contributors of unwanted kittens that flood shelters and rescues during "kitten season" every year. Unlike their adult counterparts, kittens have a hard time surviving outside with predators, cars, inclement weather, and the people who view them as a nuisance.


While the TNR program is a huge part of the Mia's Mafia mission, they often come across cats who are not actually feral. These cats are usually former pets who were dumped or abandoned and left to fend for themselves. It's easy to spot these guys, even the ones who are too scared to be friendly. Where their true feral friends are well-kept and have good body conditions, pet cats who have been abandoned don't have the skills to survive without human help. They are often dirty and thin since they are not able to hunt well, and they aren't accustomed to caring for themselves outside. As much as possible, Mia's Mafia takes these cats in and puts them up for adoption after taking care of their medical needs.

German Shepherd Rescue and Adoption - Rescuing German Shepherds in NC

German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions (GSRA) is joining us for another Spring Fling! Founded in 1992, GSRA is a group dedicated to rescuing German Shepherds in North Carolina. The Rescue primarily concentrates on rescuing German Shepherds, although it does occasionally take on mixed breeds. Most of the dogs come from local shelters; some come from owners who have requested help in finding a new home for their pet.


GSRA is a non-profit organization of dedicated volunteers committed to offering essential care and adoption services to neglected, stray or surrendered German Shepherd Dogs. Based in North Carolina and supporting the Carolinas and Virginia, their rescue strives to protect and promote the magnificent German shepherd breed.

They make a difference in the lives of German shepherds by:


* Offering adoption services

* Assisting owner surrenders of German Shepherd Dogs

* Working towards common goals of saving dogs' lives and reducing pet overpopulation.

* Educating the public in the importance of adoptions, spaying, and neutering of dogs.


A recent win in the last 6 months, GSRA has taken in (separately) 2 emaciated, neglected dogs. Both dogs were near death, only weighing 24 lbs. with a host of medical challenges caused by their malnourished state. They are happy to report that one dog was adopted and the second dog doing great and is ready for adoption.


The volunteers at GRSA love coming to Spring Fling to meet new people to join them in saving German Shepherds, new families to adopt, visiting with GSRA alumni, and spreading education and awareness of their favorite breed. They also appreciate the funds raised and the donations that they receive to help them forward their mission.

My name is Dory and I am a strikingly, beautiful young female that’s in search of a new family to spend my life with. I am approximately two years old, and I am on the taller side. I am between 70 and 75 pounds. I have a gorgeous black and tan coat. If size matters, I’m your girl!


A bit about me: I am very smart, affectionate, and I have a decent bit of energy. I am very eager to please! I approach life with exuberance and enthusiasm! I love attention and affection. I am good with men, women and older children. I may not have my PhD, but I’m super smart and eager to learn. I know how to sit, and I know how to lay down. I am working on being able to maintain these positions! I get super excited and I’m eager to bounce onto the next activity.
